Susan and Tim met playing sand volleyball over a decade ago, and by the time their wedding day arrived, they had built a full life together. They spent most of their relationship in San Diego, so choosing a Hilton San Diego Bayfront wedding felt like a perfect fit. Downtown on the water, with the bay as their backdrop, it was the right setting for a celebration that was as polished as it was joyful.
Some couples start wedding planning with a vision. That was Susan. She could picture exactly what she wanted, quite clearly actually. The only problem? She had two very different ideas and could not quite figure out how they fit together. City chic on one hand, tropical vibrant on the other. In her mind they were too distinct, too different to truly connect.
Turns out, much like Susan and Tim themselves, her two ideas were a perfect pair.

City chic and tropical vibrant. Two distinct aesthetics that might seem at odds, but coexist beautifully when the design is intentional.
The ceremony set the tone for the first half of that vision. Susan and Tim exchanged vows on a mirrored aisle with the San Diego Bay stretching out behind them. All-white florals lined the path. The palm trees of the Hilton’s waterfront terrace framed the whole scene. A live violinist set the mood. Clean, modern, and breathtaking.

During a site visit weeks before the wedding, Susan and her planner discovered a cargo ship had dropped anchor directly behind the original ceremony spot, completely blocking the bay view. The planner stepped in and pivoted (literally), rotating the entire ceremony setup to a different orientation on the terrace. It was not the bay view they had initially envisioned. But the palm trees framing the ceremony were beautiful in their own right. And on the actual wedding day, Susan and Tim handled the whole thing with humor.

Everything bloomed, starting at cocktail hour and moving into the reception. Vivid pinks and oranges, tropical florals, palm leaves: where the ceremony had been defined by an absence of color, the reception let it all pour in. The contrast was intentional and it was stunning. Even the wedding cake reflected the same theme. Four tiers, all-white with smooth rippled layers, featuring two different flavors. Tim’s tiers were Carrot Cake with Spiced Cream Cheese Filling. Susan’s were Banana Cake with Chocolate Mousse, Chocolate Truffle Filling, and cocoa nibs. Two different ideas, coming together as one.
Susan had said going into the day that once the ceremony was done, she just wanted to have fun. That is exactly what happened, and then some.

Susan and Tim thought carefully about every detail of their guests’ experience.
Many guests traveled from out of town for a full wedding weekend: a sunset cruise, a welcome reception, the wedding day itself, and a farewell breakfast. To keep everyone informed and excited, we designed a Z-fold welcome bag insert that unfolded into a complete weekend guide, with watercolor illustrations and full event details.
Children were warmly welcomed for the ceremony, including ring bearers and flower girls who joined the procession down the aisle. For the cocktail hour and reception, the couple arranged professional childcare for guests with little ones. Parents stayed fully present. Kids were well looked after. It is one of those considerate touches guests remember long after the night ends, and one worth knowing is an option for couples planning their own celebrations.
Finally, live sketch artists created digital portraits of guests that were then printed as take-home favors. Such a fun, personal keepsake to remember the day!

When Susan described her vision, I knew the invitation suite had to bring both aesthetics together cohesively, without feeling pieced together or jumbled.
The solution was the San Diego skyline. On the invitation card, the cityscape appears in blind letterpress: subtle, tactile, something you feel before you fully see it. On the details card and envelope liner, that same skyline comes to life in a vivid gradient that reads like a San Diego sunset, all warm pinks and oranges. The contrast between the two tells the whole story. The restrained, chic invitation alongside the vibrant, tropical details card. Two distinct moods, one cohesive suite.
The text was crisp black, clean and confident. The suite was finished with a variegated silk ribbon in a hand-dyed pink and orange combination, vibrant enough to signal the celebration to come and refined enough to feel completely intentional.
For day-of details, we kept the look clean and cohesive. Menus and place cards combined into a single elegant piece, in keeping with the chic, minimal aesthetic of the ceremony. A few small signs, including the guest book and bar menu, rounded out the suite.
