As the saying goes: First impressions are everything. And when it comes to your wedding, your invitations are exactly that! Your stationery is your guests first impression of your big day: it sets the tone, giving guests a sneak peek at the style and vibe they can expect at your wedding celebration. I’m so excited about the new semi-custom collection (launching in January 2025) at Beach City Creative, and I can’t wait to dive further into the details to explain the difference between semi-custom vs. custom wedding invitations.
Semi-Custom vs. Custom Wedding Invitations: What’s the Difference?
There’s no right or wrong way to do your wedding stationery! Whether you choose with a design from the semi-custom collection or we team up to create a custom design just for you, I promise you’ll end up with a stationery suite you absolutely love! That said, there are a few key differences when it comes to things like assembly, samples, revisions, design alterations, embellishments, timing, and, of course, budget.
Assembly
The semi-custom collection is perfect for couples who enjoy a hands-on approach. Your pieces will arrive with an instruction guide for assembly – or you can add professional assembly for an additional charge. With that option, your invitations will arrive ready to mail – you just stamp and send!
Prefer a completely done-for-you experience? Custom invitation packages include complimentary white-glove assembly, with optional mailing services. (On-site delivery and setup for day-of details are also available exclusively for Beach City couples with a custom design contract!)
Samples
We may live in a digital age, but let’s be honest: some things need to be seen in person to get the full effect. Considering a design from the semi-custom collection? You can purchase a sample package before ordering! The semi-custom sample package is standard, so it won’t feature your exact design or details, but still a great way to see (and feel) the quality and options available. Custom design clients receive a complimentary sample package personalized with specific style and colors, embellishments, and print methods.
Proofs & Revisions
If you choose a design from the semi-custom collection, two rounds of digital proofs are included. After you submit your details in the information questionnaire, you’ll receive the first proof to review. You can submit notes and request edits/changes, then I will send over the second proof with the revisions. If any additional changes are needed at that point, additional rounds of revision proofs are available for an additional charge. With a custom design order, proofs and revisions are unlimited!
Design & Modifications
For custom wedding invitations, the design is fully tailored to fit your personality, style, and vision for the big day. The possibilities are pretty much endless and we’ll work closely together to create something truly one-of-a-kind!
Modifications to the designs in the semi-custom collection are limited. While you can personalize the information and wording, and change some of the colors, the overall design, style, and layout cannot be altered.
Turnaround Time
Time is always a factor, especially when it comes to wedding stationery. Semi-custom invitations are faster, with a typical turnaround time of 4–6 weeks. This makes them a great choice for couples on a tighter timeline. Custom invitations require more time and collaboration, with a minimum turnaround of 12–14 weeks (plus design time). Making sure you have plenty of lead time is the way to go if you are interested in custom invitations!
Embellishments & Add-Ons
Embellishments and add-ons are a great way to customize designs within the semi-custom collection. I’ve curated a selection of some of my favorite embellishments for you to choose from and personalize!
Just like with the design, there’s no limit to the possibilities for embellishments and add-ons for custom clients. I love sourcing distinctive paper or custom-dyed ribbon, customizing laser cut shapes and patterns, and of course, adding a little something extra with specialty print methods like foil, letterpress, and embossing!
Investment
Budget often plays a significant role in your wedding planning decisions, and stationery is no exception! With a lower starting price point, semi-custom invitation suites are a more budget-friendly option.
Custom stationery design is a larger investment, but includes additional services, customization, and more! (Minimum investment for custom wedding invitations is $1,500; Beach City couples typically spend $2500-$3750 on their custom invitations and an additional $800-$2500 on custom day-of details.)
Semi-Custom vs. Custom Wedding Invitations: Which is right for you?
Semi-custom invitations are perfect for couples looking for beautiful, professional stationery with a shorter timeline and/or a smaller budget. For a fully personalized, luxury experience, custom invitations are worth the investment.
